LESSONS AND INSPIRATION FROM MARLEE MATLIN AND BILLY JOEL
Watching this it always amazes me how Billy Joel powerfully captured 40+ years of history within a four minute music video. And it always delights me to remember that Oscar winner Marlee Matlin appears as two characters: The prom-queen-turned-hippie in the mid portion of the video. I love her statement when asked about doing a music video:
Marlee: I got no flak for doing this video after my Oscar. A lot of people thought I’d never work again just because I was deaf. I’m sure their jaws were on the ground when I proved them wrong by bending their expectations and doing a music video. But that’s me. Never happy with being “silent.”
We each in own way should never be happy being silent. Be you. Always. Bend their expectations. Do what you think is right. All generations can claim the same words that baby boomer Joel wrote decades ago
"We didn't start the fire
It was always burning since the world's been turning
We didn't start the fire
No, we didn't light it, but we tried to fight it"
